Periodontal disease affects gums. It can be divided into two stages, gingivitis which is a superficial infection, and periodontitis which occurs when the infection spreads to the underlying bone. You may not notice the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease in its early stages, that is why it is very important to have regular dental check- ups.
